Canadian High Commission hosts 26th AGM of SLCBC

The High Commission of Canada, as patron of the Sri Lanka Canada Business Council (SLCBC), hosted the 26th Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the SLCBC on June 13.  A key stakeholder in strengthening the existing bilateral relations between Sri Lanka and Canada, the SLCBC operates under the aegis of the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce and engages with the High Commission of Canada to further enhance trade ties between the two countries.

The High Commissioner of Canada, Shelley Whiting, speaking at the event stated that ‘the Sri Lanka Canada Business Council has been a longstanding partner of the High Commission in promoting Trade. I look forward to innovative initiatives that will showcase the Council’s activities in Sri Lanka and add value to its membership’. She further noted the strength and the depth of relationship between the two countries, the market potential in Sri Lanka and the country’s growth and the opportunities to further trade ties.

Addressing the members, the newly elected President Harith Jayasuriya, Director/Chief Marketing Officer, MAC Holdings (Pvt) Ltd thanked Chandev Abhayaratne, the outgoing President, for the immense contribution made towards the growth of Sri Lanka Canada Business Council during the last 2 years. Jayasuriya highlighted the Council’s main objectives as to promote bilateral trade, investment, technical and economic co-operation, tourism and services between Sri Lanka and Canada. He further stressed the need for SLCBC to take leadership in promoting investment and trade initiatives between Sri Lanka and Canada.

The AGM was followed by a networking reception for the local business community, stakeholders in the government and international organizations. The key note address of the evening was delivered by Jeevani Siriwardena, Director General of the Export Development Board (EDB) of Sri Lanka on the agreement between the EDB with Canada’s Trade Facilitation Office (TFO).  TFO is a non-government organization in Canada working to source products from developing countries, such as Sri Lanka, and supporting small and medium scale enterprises. The presentation focussed on the nature of the agreement, opportunities such as market orientation programs and market visits, and how Sri Lankan companies can avail themselves of the benefits of the agreement.

The membership of the Sri Lanka Canada Business Council is comprised of approximately 60 companies across diverse sectors such as logistics and tourism, imports, exports, manufacturing and services amongst many others. The primary focus of the Council is to facilitate trade between Sri Lanka and Canada, encourage partnerships, exchange of information between the two countries and promote investments. The Business Council also engages with partner organizations in Canada to promote the socio-economic conditions in Sri Lanka. The event is supported by the Trade Commissioner Service (TCS) of the Canadian High Commission in Sri Lanka. The TCS is the Canadian government’s network of Trade professionals that promotes Canadian goods and services, facilitates innovation and R&D, as well as builds networks between Sri Lanka and Canada.

Pendulum Express Lines launches its services to Colombo, Sri Lanka

June 12, Colombo: Hong Kong registered Pendulum Express Lines (PEL) launched its services (PIX) to Colombo, Sri Lanka recently. The Pakistan India Express service (PIX) would have a rotation from Singapore – Port Klang – Colombo – Karachi – Mundra – Port Klang and would service its clients initially through slot arrangements with another main liner.

PEL commenced business in 2001 offering various feeder services as a vessel operator and have over 10 weekly scheduled feeder services in the region currently. PEL is recognized as an emerging player in the feeder business and have extensive growth plans to be positioned as one of the most desired feeder carriers in the market in the coming years.

With regional offices in Singapore, Thailand, Cambodia, China and agency representation all over Asia, PEL would be introducing a new weekly service with effect from July 2017.  The new service would be North Asia – India Subcontinent Service (NISC) together with partners HMM, CMA, KMTC and SCI. Each partner including Pendulum will contribute 01 vessel while HMM will contribute 02 vessels.

The tentative rotation would be Xingang (Tianjin) / Qingdao / Ningbo / Singapore / Port Klang / Nhava Sheva / Mundra / Hazira / Colombo / Port Klang / Singapore / Xingang

MAC Air Express has been appointed a preferred sales agent for Cebu Pacific effective March 2017.

SLSBC concludes Singapore trade and investment promotion mission

The Sri Lanka-singapore Business Council (SLSBC) of the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce successfully concluded a business mission to Singapore recently.

The mission was organised to coincide with the Singapore Business Federation (SBF) seminar on doing business and opportunities in Sri Lanka followed by one-to-one business meetings, organised by the SBF, the apex business chamber in Singapore with over 18,000 members, closely supported by International Enterprise (IE) Singapore, the government agency driving Singapore’s external economy and promoting the overseas growth of Singapore-based enterprises and international trade and in association with the Sri Lankan High Commission in Singapore.

The 18-member delegation led by SLSBC President and Spear Global Holdings (Pvt.) Ltd Chairman/ Managing Director Shamil Mendis resulted in an extremely productive visit to Singapore.

The opening remarks were made by SBF and South Asia Business Group Vice Chairman Dr. R. Theyvendran while the keynote address was made by Sri Lanka High Commissioner to Singapore Nimal Weeraratne.

Addressing the gathering, Mendis stated that the participation of Sri Lankan delegates in a series of successful seminars and business sessions organised by the SBF and IE Singapore in the past has resulted in productive business contacts and partnerships between Singaporean and Sri Lankan companies. Considering Sri Lanka’s rapidly developing status as a regional hub for business Mendis invited the potential Singaporean investors to visit Sri Lanka in order to explore the many opportunities available for doing business in the country.

Ariyasinghe made a detailed presentation on the, business environment and economic developments in Sri Lanka.

IE Singapore Manager South Asia Arthur Teng spoke on the sectorial opportunities for Singapore companies in Sri Lanka while Goonewardene made a presentation on setting up a business and taxation in Sri Lanka.

The seminar concluded with scheduled one-on-one business meetings between the representatives of the Singapore companies and the Sri Lankan delegates as well as with the opportunity for the Singaporeans to interact with the official from the BOI of Sri Lanka and clarify matters relating to potential investments.

The delegation also participated in a series of meetings with companies arranged by the Singapore Malay Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SMCCI) and Singapore Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SICCI), which provided them an opportunity to network with their respective member companies and senior officials of the two chambers.

Weeraratne, supported by Second Secretary Commercial Rekha Mallikarachchi, hosted the members of the delegation for a networking session with Singaporean companies interested in exploring business opportunities and members of the Singapore-sri Lanka Business Association (SLBA) during the mission.
